Contrast therapy involves alternating between hot and cold treatments to harness the benefits of both temperature extremes. This therapeutic practice is used to promote recovery, enhance circulation, and reduce inflammation.

When you book our recovery room, you get private access to both the infrared sauna and cold plunge tub. During your allotted time, you have complete freedom to do contrast therapy with both amenities or use one or the other.

Best practices

It is recommended to start your contrast therapy practice with hot exposure first for anywhere from 20-40 minutes. The heat helps to dilate blood vessels and relax muscles.

Follow up your hot treatment immediately with cold exposture. Cold application causes blood vessels to contrict, reducing blood flow and decreasing inflammation.

The recommended duration in the cold plunge is between 1-5 minutes. If you are new to cold plunging, start small and gradually increase over repeated sessions. Submerge yourself to your neck and focus on deep nasal breaths throughout the duration of your session.

If desired, you can repeat shorter cycles of contrast therapy within the same session. For example 3-5 cycles (hot-cold-hot-cold…).

Do I have the recovery studio to myself?

Yes! When you book our recovery room, you get private access to both the sauna and the cold plunge during your allotted time.

Do I have to be a patient at The Body Lab to use the recovery room?

Our Recovery Studio is open to anyone! You don’t have to be a patient at the clinic to take advantage of our amenities.

Can I share a booking with a partner or friend?

Yes, we offer “buddy passes” that allow you to book the recovery room with a partner or friend. Select the “Two person session” option on the booking page here. 

What do I bring / wear to my session?

We provide towels, but please bring or wear a swimsuit to your cold plunge session. If you plan to do the sauna, please bring a change of clothes such as shorts and a tank top or sports bra. We kindly request you do not wear wet clothes into the sauna.

What happens after I sign up?

After you reserve your session, look for an email with a waiver and instructions sent to your inbox. This will tell you everything you need to know about accessing our 24-hour space.

How often should I do contrast therapy?

We recommend doing contrast therapy anywhere from a couple times a week to daily.
